Kennet and Avon Canal in Winter

Added: 17 January 2009.
The top lock on the Caen Hill flight of the Kennet and Avon Canal. Frozen solid in the depths of winter with the trees covered in rime. Everyone got excited about the Canal freezing over. It soon melted when the temperature rose above freezing. But the ice was not that thick. In the winters before global warming took hold you could sledge on the ice and two hundred pound plus men would walk on it without fear. Today the canal rarely freezes even like this.
