Floating Harbour, Bristol
The Floating Harbour, Bristol at night. Bristol lies on the River Avon which is heavily tidal at this point. In order to maintain Bristol's competitve edge as a major British sea port the Floating Dock was built. The Avon was diverted and a system of locks constructed which enable the visiting ships to float, and thus be loaded/unloaded whatever the level of the tide. Unfortunately for Bristol by the time the docks were finished most of the important trade had moved to Liverpool.
